Michele,
I setup my blog as an experiment and like the idea of using it instead as on online portfolio. I would appreciate your thoughts on whether or not you think this is appropriate.
I've also attached my resume. I have gone for a simple, one-page version. In my experience, people rarely read past the first page anyways. Again, I would appreciate your thoughts on this.
I wish I had participated in the online forum, but I had visitors from Washington and was away from my computer last week.
Hi Dan--I took a quick look and I think your resume looks pretty good. A couple of thoughts. . .
I'd suggest changing your paragraph at the top to a bulleted list of some key skills and accomplishments. It would be easier to read and I think draw more attention to areas you want to highlight. Ideally, you would change this list to correspond as closely as possible to the specific job you're applying for when you send in your resume.
If you're doing a lot of applying online, you will particularly want to load your resume up with the keywords associated with the job you're applying for. Here's a good article on the use of keywords in electronic resumes.
I would also recommend talking more about specific qualitative and quantitative achievements. You do that in a few places, but it's a good idea to do that as much as possible, again targeted for the job you're using your resume to apply for.
Overall, I think your resume is pretty good--just needs some tweaks.
I originally started setting up my online portfolio through wikispaces, but found the format kind of clunky. I recently discovered this website: http://www.visualcv.com that provides FREE space for setting up your portfolio/visual resume. I'm looking into moving there for my portfolio. If I do move there, I'll post my link for feedback.
Hi Elisa--Let me know how things go with using Visual CV. I've seen them all over the place and even signed up for an account, but haven't really had time to play with it. I'd be curious to get your feedback on it.
I may have posted my first comment in the wrong place but I'll post here too. I just finished writing my first blog entry. I actually went back to January to answer the LC question of the month. It was a good starting place for me. I'll post my second entry within a few days I hope. Let me know what you think. I really appreciate all the resources you posted on blogging.
Michele, It seems that this group has quieted down. I joined back in February when it looked like my job was ending. I fortunately got a year's extension and drifted away. Now that I am entering my last six months of salary, it is time to start pushing once more.
As a means of drawing attention to my quest, I have renamed my blog to reflect my ideal position. I am now "Your Next Executive Director." I would love to know what you think of this move. Is this too pushy or is it clever.
Thanks,
Dan
Dan, I think your blog is awesome. Just in a few posts I got some great links I'd never seen before. I don't think that you've been hard sell at all in renaming your blog or in how you're selling yourself on your blog--I think you've found a great balance there. One thought I had was that you could add something on sort of your philosophy of being an ED and how you run organizations, similar to the "teaching philosophy" statement that teachers have to do. You get at some of that in your FAQ's section, but you might want to do this is a separate piece with a separate link--just a thought.
You might also want to get into Twitter--I know that's where a lot of the action is lately. You may be on there already, so if you are, you might also want to add your feed to your site along with a button to follow you. Of course, I haven't put these on my own blog, so this is a matter of "do as I say, not as I do." :-)
